A 2025 systematic review from researchers at RCSI identified human, AI and hybrid coaching approaches in digital health interventions and found all three modalities feasible and acceptable, while also highlighting that digital interventions still face engagement and retention challenges.
Is an AI personal trainer as good as a human personal trainer?
That question is too broad to answer with a simple yes or no.
Human professionals can do things software cannot reliably reproduce.
A qualified trainer can:
- observe movement directly
- respond to subtle context
- build a personal relationship
- make judgement calls
- physically demonstrate or correct exercises
